March Sweetness

March was a special month for us. We were busy celebrating every bit of Spring we could find, agonizing over all the rain, looking at property up country, celebrating Easter and more....

Our oldest got baptized ~ this was something she had wanted to do for more than a year. It was a very special moment for our family.

When we went up country we visited dear friends.

A picture taken by my oldest.

                                                      New leaves on their way!!

                                                                          Hyacinth

                                                        Fun with second cousins

                                                 Thoughtfulness and light together

                                                Good ingredients for a party

Getting ready for the traditional egg dying with Grandma and this year special guests Charissa and Rohan!

                                                                           Fresh Paska

Here are Violets!!! They are all over our neighbors lawn. He is so sweet he can't bear to cut his grass because he does not want to mow them down.

Hair cuts are needed but these children are so dramatic you'd think I was taking them to their death. So I wait as long as I can before administering the torture of a hair cut.

'Mom do these shoes go with my outfit?' 'Here I'll take a picture and you decide.'

Thanks Grandma!!! We so appreciate you!

Being three is so wonderful ~ Everything is still the best ever!!!

Something many children might not get to experience and these two have no clue how blessed they are....playing in the sink with water..endlessly.

and onwards the year marches...haha get it?

A Little Update

Good morning! How are you? I wanted to share a little update about my life here in my corner of the world. This morning the sun is shining and the birds are singing and although the sky is grey the day feels promising. We have had a very hard weekend as our sweet kitten disappeared. We have searched high and low for her but she has vanished. We feel quite sure something took her away and that we will not see her again but small parts of us hope this is not true and one morning she will be back again at the door. We have spent a lot of time in tears and a lot of time wandering the neighborhood calling and calling her name.

In other news homeschool is going full swing. My thirteen year old just finished a chapter in Social Studies on China and for English read the book Gladys Alward who was a missionary in China. Her story is incredible. She was a five foot tall woman who went to China alone during the 1930's and worked with a woman in her seventies to establish an inn in the mountains. She ended up helping ban foot binding and rescuing many orphans during the time Japan attacked China, and doing many other brave and mighty things. She put all her trust in God and although she went through many hard ships He was faithful to carry her through. This is what I love about homeschooling. I love being reminded of the History of the world and the many many amazing individuals who have made their mark on it. My eleven year old and seven year old and I are reading about Famous Canadians and this week we have read about the five women who courageously worked together to get women declared Persons in Canada. They also helped women get the right to vote and be allowed to be in government. Learning about plate tectonics and simple machines and just all the things we are flying through as we get towards the end of the year are great and I am glad that as the grades get higher things get more interesting for me!

My husband and I are working on buying a property about four hours away from our town. We will find out this week if we can get financing. It is in a very tiny town but close to much bigger ones. It is the property of our dreams for many reasons and we are hopeful that maybe this is the one for us? However nothing is set in stone yet and it could all fall through. We are praying that if this is where we are supposed to be that this will happen and if it is not that things will fall apart and we will not get it. Our dreams are important and we have held onto them for a long time. Dreams of our children living in a more rural setting, of owning animals, and my husband being able to be home a bit more, dreams of community living and connection to animals and nature...however much more than any of those dreams we want to walk in God's will, and so we focus on that as we go forward. If we do buy this property we can't afford to actually live there yet. So there is a lot of faith going into this decision as well. We would have to rent it out first. All these unknowns tend to overwhelm me. What a surprise. Me overwhelmed? Never! Haha. I am waiting and hoping all will be well.

Something else that happened this week.... This week has been a bit crazy.... I was going to go to bed and decided to take some probiotic pills. I usually take pills by the sink but ended up taking them in a totally different location than I ever had. As I did I realized I smelled smoke! There was smoke coming out of a plug that was located on top of the counter right where I was standing. The wall beside the plug was hot. I didn't know what to do so I woke up my husband. He went and turned off the breaker. So if you ever realize you have an electrical fire...turn off the breakers! He then took the plug out and it was very melted underneath. If I had not gone to take those pills we might have all died. We have no fire alarms upstairs and four of us sleep up here. I have bought fire alarms but they have never been installed! Needless to say I got the fire alarms and set one up right by that plug. Drama drama!

Last but not least this is my birthday month. I love April and I love my birthday. This is thanks to my mom. She instilled the love of celebrating and being celebrated. My husband did not have that same gift given to him and so he does not relish birthdays in the same way. I am working hard to instill this in my children and they are excited for me and they take all year to plan their own birthdays. My oldest has worked so hard to save up to buy me a gift I mentioned in passing that I wanted last year sometime. I am excited for all the birthdays this month and anniversaries and all the beautiful special reasons to celebrate life!

What gifts we have in the people around us. No one is perfect but they are ours. It is good to be reminded of that often. We only have this moment with them.

Back to homeschooling we go. My son and I got a really early start this morning on his work which was great so I have two more children left to go. I hope you have a really wonderful week. Remember to love yourself by staying hydrated, eating life giving food, exercising gently, and getting lots of fresh air. Practicing gratefulness and giving is also soul filling ~

Good Bye Frodo

Well two nights ago one of our sweet children let our Frodo out at 10:30 which was very much against the rules. The next morning she was gone. She had been left outside at night before accidentally. She would always be waiting for us the next morning meowing furiously to be let in. She was my son's special pet but really she loved the whole family (except our toddler) equally. She thought of herself as one of us and whenever we drove away we would see her watching out the window. If she was outside when we were getting in our van she would hop in ready to come. She was sweet and kind and curious and we are heartbroken that she has disappeared. It is tempting in these situations to wish she had just never come so that we could have avoided feeling this pain. One of my great hesitations in having a pet was that this nightmare would come true. In this case it has come so soon. We did not even get to own her for a year. However this is the greatest chance to learn about fully enjoying every moment we have with people and animals we love! We just don't know how long we have. We enjoyed our time with Frodo Aowyn dearly. There have been many tears the last few days and we hold onto hope that somehow she can make her way back to us. So that is what we will be dealing with this week.

Fresh, Life Giving Air, During Depression

A simple Wednesday it was and nothing thrilling planned at all. The clouds poured down from the sky endlessly and grey permeated everything it seemed. I felt like there was too much in my brain and I could not process it. I need to leave my house to process things. I need there to be a low energy ~ no expectations from me ~ setting to process I have realized. These days there is very little time for me to leave the house alone. I get tiny snatches of time here and there but it is not enough. With that being said I had this amazing moment in my home that really opened up a window in my mind that had been stuck shut and it happened because of Instagram.

I have been hating Instagram lately only because I stare at it mindlessly wishing for some fulfillment and feeling bored and tired. However I started to watch a  live video by Joy Prouty who is a mother of five. Her husband is a ' homeschooling stay at home dad' and she is a photographer that works all over the United States. She started to talk about the depression she has decided to deal with lately. Her thoughts about it all and the thing she had learned were not exactly new but struck a chord in me. One of the sweetest things about her talk was all the woman chiming in saying they understood and how this was their story and for a brief moment I didn't feel so alone. It was beautiful. Feeling like you are the only one, this weird awkward misfit, can be demoralizing and paralyzing but truly we are never alone..EVER!

I thought I might as well share some things she spoke. This is for you if you suffer from depression and for me to look back on and remember the light that shone in for me on such a gloomy day.

I come from a family that has struggled with depression on both my father and mother's sides. I don't know how far back it goes but it is safe to say that depression and anxiety are pretty deeply engrained in me. I remember feeling a sadness and heaviness from a very young age.  I had no tools to deal with it. I coped as best I could and have always kept going. However it would be wonderful if I could get to a place in my life and mind and being where depression was a memory and something that taught me many deep things but that wasn't something I battled so often.

Joy said she felt sad and heavy all the time and she said it was because of pain from childhood. I find that quite common with depression. We are so vulnerable as children and have so little capacity to properly understand and work through things that happen to us. So things happen that hurt, we don't know how to process the pain and it gets filed away somewhere deep so we don't have to think about it or remember it. However it is wound that is still there! It wont be able to heal without a lancing and bleeding and cleaning! Joy described her pain as sleeping inside her and that it had always been with her. Her wounds are abandonment and feeling unlovable. She said when it started to 'wake up' it came out as deep depression and feeling paralyzed because of feeling too much deep emotion. She said that she felt like it was hard to breathe. Like her breathe was stuck inside of her. She knew physically she was breathing but she was stuck. Has anyone ever felt that? I know that feeling so clearly. You just want the freedom to take a big deep  breath!

She said she listened to a pod cast 'On Being' by Krista Tippet with Parker Palmer. He wrote a book called, 'Let Your Life Speak.' He spoke about talking about his depression to a therapist who said he was presenting his depression like the hand of an enemy crushing him. The therapist asked if there was any way he could think of the depression as the hand of a friend trying to press you down on ground on which it is safe to stand.

Parker than gave some word pictures ~ That it was like a figure walking behind you talking to you trying to tell you something but you ignore it. The figure gets louder and closer and you keep walking away because you are in free will and you don't have to listen. Finally this figure is screaming at you and because you still don't listen all of a sudden it must drop the atomic bomb of depression on your head so you will listen. Joy likened this figure to the Holy Spirit or your soul. She presented the option of just turning around and asking the figure what it wanted. What needs to be dealt with?

That is where the friend piece comes in. If you can view this depression as a friend trying to tell you that you need help and that your soul is crying for some sort of healing and freedom it is such a different picture than the crushing hand of a foe.

We need tools to deal with depression and time. We may have a startlingly empty tool belt no matter our age. We may have very little self awareness. Our body may be breaking down not just mentally but physically as well from all the 'things' we in our 'free will' refuse to seek healing for.

Is your heart broken and dead on the floor? Can you look at it like your heart is broken all the way open to hold the range of human experience? (Joy Prouty and Parker Palmer)

There is healing for your soul and your heart ~ for all that pain. It takes work and consistency and someone needs to teach you what your own tools are and how to pick up those tools and use them. We need to learn about self love, self care, about empathy and peace and relaxation. Everyone's journey is so unique but we all need the same things!

Joy talked about empathy and compassion and about needing community ~ So many good things she presented in this live talk and I am grateful. There were so many reminders that I needed and like I said a window was opened in my soul that had been stuck shut. Fresh cool life giving air rushed into my soul and refreshed me.

Blessings to you ~

April

Welcome April ~ The weather has been a disappointment in our fair country I think. Most people spend much of their life inside buildings now and so grey rainy days that are bone chillingly cold are expected in November, December, January, and February for sure! By March we are starting to hope for sun and some warmth and this year we had a couple days where we could have gotten sunburned and from then on it has been cold enough for warm coats and the heat on in the house. There is fresh snow falling all over the country and hearts are feeling more than a bit of despair.

However as I look out my window (I live close to the coast) I see fresh leaves starting to come out and there are flowers everywhere! It is beautiful and so inspiring but the lack of sun leaves this lifeless feeling. I want to feel alive and warm!

So here is hoping that Spring sun will come soon to stay. When my parents got married thirty seven years ago on April 11th it snowed...Spring is a finicky season, desperately longed for, and not taken forgranted!

We just finished Spring break here and getting back into the swing of homeschool is not so easy. I have exactly two months left to get everything done with the children in regards to curriculum!!!! Here we go...
