Summer 2017 Kilby Museum Visit

I adore going to Kilby's museum. I grew up going to this place with my mom and grandparents. It is a place where my heart feels happy and at peace. I try to go at least once a year. I hope I am raising my children to love it just as much as I. It is a place that my grandparents really valued and invested into and I hope to do that same as time goes on. We went this summer on' Heritage Day.' My children helped make ice cream the old fashioned way with ice and salt. The end result was a cold and delicious whip cream like ice cream. They did a lot of other things as well and it was absolutely magical for me. I did make my six year old dress up and she was NOT impressed but she survived. I just wanted pretty pictures :)

Here are some

There is an assortment of animals about the museum that you can pet and feed as it is a farm and general store type of museum.

He spent most of his time with the animals

This large goat was a force to be reckoned with

This is the gardens of their tea shop and restaurant

Going to see the Jersey cows

All of them looking at something!!

These little piggies have sharp teeth!!

                                                                                Checkers

                                                               Making the ice cream!!!

There were games and crafts the children could take part in. I think she tried them all.

This is my favorite building ~ an old cabin that was transplanted here years ago. There is a bench dedicated to my grandpa on the porch. I sat on it and beside me was a tiny baby chick in a cage and I can't really explain how I felt but it was an old and lovely feeling that I wish I could feel more often.

                                                                           Teeter Totter

                                                                       The tree fort

The ice cream was a success and so delicious! It took about 45 minutes of man power to make.

This is in the old general store

There was a post office in the general store

This area (Harrison Mills) used to flood regularly so everything was built up above the water line

Not a posed picture just single quick moment captured

It was a HOT day and of course my hair is never a priority so I look like I always do every single day and my children are precious are they not?

It was a wonderful day in amongst all the days that make up the month of August this year and I was so thankful it happened.

Flowers I Have Been Enjoying Lately

I am always on the look out for flowers. They are all so unique and have such color and vibrance. Some are so tiny and delicate some are large and in charge! I have taken these pictures in various back yards, a museum, and professional gardens :)

Enjoy xo

This is the one and only Lily that survived the Lily beheading of 2017. I guess my children thought the growing buds were too tempting to pass up. If only they knew what was to come!

Purple Clematis growing on our Ivy arbor

This is at Kilby's Museum ~ one of my favorite places to go

These were on the grounds of the Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC

These were at Butterfly Gardens in Victoria, BC

These Sweet Peas were planted in my friend Courteny's vegetable garden by her mother

These were at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC

Last but not least...these sweet hearts have survived smoke and drought and are living despite the odds. I thought they deserved a shout out!

I hope you have had time this summer to enjoy any blooms around you xo

A Little Update on August

 Hey Dear Ones,

I just returned from a little trip to Vancouver Island. It has been a dry summer ~ very dry. There have been wild fires burning all over our Province and so the air has been choked with smoke for days. Our trip to the island brought relief from the smoke and the haze and THAT is the perfect illustration of what it has been my life this 2017 summer as well.

I have been grieving since February and grieving many things. It was right around that time I started sleeping better for the first time in years as my two year old started sleeping through the night which gave my body some sort of release to process a lot of things I have been struggling through. I also lost a baby. Being pregnant for over twelve weeks, miscarrying, and the aftermath for me was a lot to take. All Summer I felt like the smoke ~ just lying heavy, and choking, nothing clear, and it was hard. I have had lots of times like that in my life ~ which in many ways makes it harder for me because I felt so guilty being sad...AGAIN!

However getting away on this trip was happy. I needed happy.

I took lots of pictures which I will share with you at a later day.

And if you have been grieving something. If you have felt heavy, like the pain in your heart makes you gasp for breath, if you have felt like you can't really even walk because your body just does not have the strength. Well, welcome to most of my summer, and I can promise you that if you keep on, things will slowly lift. One day the sun might shine through, and the air might feel clear and easy to breathe, and all that was in a haze in your heart and spirit might look clear and clean and bright.

It might take a long time and thats okay. Give yourself time. Don't stop looking for healing, let yourself rest, and I hope you will feel loved and supported ~ because you are worth that! I'll write again soon.

I Never Want to Forget

It is late and my house is still. I am overcome at this moment with such strong reminders of my grandmothers because of a movie I just finished.

As time goes on and our world shifts from one generation to the next everything slowly or quickly changes ~ sort of. In some ways things never change. There is always war, famine, grief, loss, crime. There is always people who want more, people who want power, people who are so incredibly evil. There are also babies born ready for love, there is overflowing joy, there are men and woman who work hard every day, day in and day out, doing the mundane, the tedious, to provide for their families and their hearts are always hope filled. They instill beauty and the light of dreams in their children's hearts because the light of hopes, and dreams, is how we keep on.

I never want to forget where I have come from.

I remember my great grandfather clearly. He died when I was about five or maybe six but I remember how handsome and elegant and kind I thought he was. I felt a certain awe around him. I remember his voice on the phone and the view from his living room window. I remember sitting at his dining room table and eating lunch. He fought in the First World War but in the Second World War he was in parliament. His sons fought in the Second World War ~ well his oldest son did. His youngest son (for he had just the two sons), my grandfather, went from Vancouver to Winnipeg to train for the Navy, but the war ended just before he was shipped out. While there however, at the tender age of eighteen or nineteen, he met my grandmother at a canteen and they were married. The war brought them together. They would have never met if not for that. This was my mother's parents.

I did not meet my father's father ~ my grandfather. He was eighteen when he left Canada for Europe to fight. He fought through the entire war for our freedom. When he arrived home he married my granny who had been faithfully waiting for him. They went on to have eight living children. My grandfather died before I was born. He suffered because of his experiences. His heart was hurt I think from the pain and trauma of his war experiences and he died of a heart attack when his youngest son was just eleven. My great grandfather on my father's side I also did not get to meet but he also fought in World War One.

My maternal grandmother grew up on a farm that was lost during The Great Depression. She grew up without electricity and her father drove a horse and buggy to town. When their farm was auctioned off and they had to move they took their radio cabinet and a mirror as reminders. I have the radio cabinet in my house today. I can imagine they must have spent hours gathered around it during the war listening to all the sadness and horror going on in the world and yet holding onto hope. One of my grandmother's wishes she told me one special day, was that she would not be forgotten, that somehow she would remain in our hearts after she was gone. She wanted to be remembered.

My paternal grandmother grew up in the very town I live in now. She went to elementary school just down the road from the last house I lived in. She wanted to be a nurse and started pursuing that, however her mother became ill and so she went home to take care of her. She never got to be a nurse. She was a woman of incredible strength of spirit. She gave and gave and gave of herself. She was creative and kind and yet fierce. She went through much loss, sadness, and I imagine her marriage hurt her deeply as her husband was so wounded inside. Yet she remained faithful to the end and never remarried.

I feel like deep down I always knew what treasures my grandmothers were. I spent many hours with them growing up. I could see how they struggled, how their lives were, and I saw their choices to remind strong, to remain vibrant, to give of themselves, to serve. I saw their hearts to love even when loving was hard or they did not receive love in return. I saw them live simply, creatively, using their talents and gifts. I saw them cook, bake, can, preserve. I saw them sew, knit, serve the public. Each of them was known by name in their town by almost every one on the streets when we went for walks. I am so thankful that inside of me I feel their love still because I really do.

I want to challenge you to look back to your history. Not all of mine is good, not at all. There is much abuse, sadness, trauma, anxiety and the list is quite endless. However I want to choose to be gracious with myself in regards to the struggles I face because of my history and also focus on the ones who went before me, fought for my freedom, loved me before they knew me, and who loved me beautifully while they were with me. I also want to remember that all those parts of those people, both good and bad, are in me! I want to give the best parts of them to my children. Lately in my struggles I have been forgetting who I truly am and who has gone before me.

I write this because I miss them, I remember them, I hold them before me as a reminder that no matter how I feel inside, now matter how hard I think things are, they hold me up as they are my foundation. They are why I am here and I am grateful to be here. My job is as theirs was ~ to love, to serve, to give, to be creative, to stand for freedom, justice, to hold fast to my faith, and to not give up. They showed this to me clearly and I will not forget.

Summer Goes By

  Happy Friday ~
I find Summer is aging a bit. She is showing her wear and tear. Leaves are not the fresh vibrant green of Spring or the rich deep green of early Summer, but a more aged and faded green, some have dried to almost nothing. The corn has grown from tiny sweet wisps in the ground to tall strong adolescent almost adulthood stalks. Many Summer flowers have bloomed once and are on their second go round if they have that option and people are browned by days at the lake. The Winter and Spring pale skin has changed to strident freckles or nut brown and many toe nails are painted bright pops of color. Summer is in full swing. It is not new, it is not young, it is in full maturity and it is beautiful. How delightful to live in a world where there are seasons and how glad I am to enjoy so fully each and every one.

This weekend marks the time my husband starts his days off. The children are so excited. I hope for their sake he can muster the energy to make whatever dreams in their hearts come true...although the baby is sure beyond a doubt that his daddy is going to make a boat and take them out on the water...

This week in my town there were supposed to be record days of heat but then smoke rolled in, so heavy the sun looked like it was angry, and the smoke shielded us from the glare to some degree. Today it feels almost cool. I am going to take the day to try to clean my house a bit. In summer there are always bare and dirty feet coming through and we have walls that need washing badly, counters, cabinets, floors you name it they are dirt covered.

My two girls are at their last day of dance camp. They have both never danced before so I thought this might be fun for them to try. They did both ballet and hip hop and my six year old liked hip hop and my twelve year old liked ballet. My ten year old has been working hard on his summer Math program working towards catching up to his grade level. He has a long way to go but he has also come so far. My two year old is more devoted to 'Pepper' Peppa Pig now than Paw Patrol and is very very opinionated. Some of his days are just more screaming than anything, but we get by.

 Upwards and onwards we go.

Have a lovely long weekend if you live in Canada. Have a lovely weekend all the rest ~

A Smokey Day

Good day ~

It is Tuesday and the air is filled with smoke here. I can not see the mountains. There is a raging fire miles away but the smoke has drifted here and it is a reminder to me how much my Province has suffered this summer from wild fires, and that there are many people suffering right now!

How is your summer progressing? It is August first today! August first of 2017!
This last weekend I drove out to another town to visit a dear friend. We were both so tired (we both have children and are full time moms) but we did something special. We went to an art gallery and saw some of Monet's original paintings. They were beautiful in their ornate golden frames. I honestly can't quite express how nice it was for me to get out and to go somewhere and see something new and learn something. I felt so different for a small bit of time. There were many people to observe as well in their unique styles of expression, the sun was shining, and Monet loved flowers and gardens and he created one that was so magnificent it still lives on.

Monet did all sorts of radical things for art but the one that stood out to me was that he was one of the original artists who started to bring their easels outside. He painted right in the beauty. Before this people had had to first sketch their picture and then take it in to paint it. He also was all about capturing the light and getting it onto his page. Some of his pictures looked so hastily done, because they were, as he desperately tried to capture the scene before the light changed. I loved how when I looked at one of the pictures straight on I couldn't really see anything but color. I walked away from the picture and happened to glance back and really saw the shape the picture was. It was a willow tree in glorious color looking windswept and dark and sombre. It was stunning.

This trip helped me get some perspective and remember that sometimes stepping away and looking back can make a big difference!

So I was glad I could do that.

This month my husband is taking some time off. Usually he is home on Saturdays and Sundays and gone a majority of the day Monday to Friday. On weekends he is so tired he spends a lot of time sleeping and the other parts of it restless. I hope that this time off can be nurturing for all of us. That happening will largely rest on me. So I guess I am going to try to be more giving and also aware of everyone's needs and I hope this August will be a happy one we can look back on. So much rests on a mother. So much.

God bless you xo
